And the 26-year-old actor decided to open up about his issues not on a daytime talk show, but while out in the woods with adventurer Bear Grylls on his new TV show Running Wild.
On Monday night's episode the High School Musical star explained his problems didn't stem from a heavy work load but from being famous. 'Pretty soon you need a social lubricant,' Efron said.
'The challenging part was never the work. That was never it,' he said of what made him spiral out of control.
'It was the sort of in-between work. The social aspects outside of it, I mean everywhere you go there is press in some form. It can be everywhere and it can be confusing. You spend a lot of time in your house, going crazy.'
He added, 'It was getting to the point where I was caring less for the work and waiting more for the weekend, where I couldn't wait to go out and sort of let loose and have fun,' he admitted. 'But when Monday and Tuesday were difficult to get through, then I was like, ''Ah, this is bad.''
