I must have been high when I read this because I remember absolutely LOVING the book in high school but this is not what I envisioned it to be at all... I had no idea it was set in a futuristic setting or that the main characters were supposed to be teens

A "utopian" society that is devoid of emotions. The protagonist is an exception though, as he will be the next "giver". A bunch of crap happens after that.

It's a great book, you should read it.
