She wasn't a respected musician by those who knew nothing about music. But those who did, especially other musicians, admired her musicality greatly. From jazz instrumentalists to legendary producers, she was widely respected.

She had a messy drug habit
I don't know where you were, but in the last 10 years of Whitney's career the GP was tossing her wig around like a frisbee. Every sketch comedy show and stand-up comedian mocked her, and she was literally a laughing stock at one point. Getting booed in concert and what not. Thats not being respected.
