These people were always HIV+. They just weren't getting tested until they absolutely had no other choice. Remaining untested was no longer a tenable position for them.
Most of the people who catch HIV catch it from people who don't know they are positive. Now that PREP is finally available to the gay masses I wonder what that will do to the rate of HIV transmission. PREP is at least as effective at blocking HIV as a condom...95+%. So between the two there is no reason this number won't come back down once everyone gets a current HIV test so we can get an accurate accounting. Those who are negative should take PREP and make sure the other person knows their status and is taking the proper treatments for it so as not to spread it around. The tests only measure one point in time. So it's crucial that people having sex get tested every 3 months.

If you want to have sex with other guys than it's a problem and it's not fair. You're not only hurting yourself by having unprotected sex. Be safe, it's easy for the both of you to get tested.
