Woman arrested for killing virtual husband

Yeah the title says it all. She was really arrested for hacking, but you will get the point when you read it.

The woman, who is jailed on suspicion of illegally accessing a computer and manipulating electronic data, used his identification and password to log onto popular interactive game "Maple Story" to carry out the virtual murder in mid-May, a police official in northern Sapporo said on condition of anonymity, citing department policy.

"I was suddenly divorced, without a word of warning. That made me so angry," the official quoted her as telling investigators and admitting the allegations.

The woman had not plotted any revenge in the real world, the official said.
She has not yet been formally charged, but if convicted could face a prison term of up to five years or a fine up to $5,000.

Players in "Maple Story" raise and manipulate digital images called "avatars" that represent themselves, while engaging in relationships, social activities and fighting against monsters and other obstacles.

The woman used login information she got from the 33-year-old office worker when their characters were happily married, and killed the character. The man complained to police when he discovered that his beloved online avatar was dead.

I never played Maple Story. I had a friend who was addicted to it though. Now that same friend refuses to come out of his house because he is playing World Of Warcraft. I feel like killing his character so he can stop telling me "Yooo I'm in a raid right now. I'll be out later." Later doesn't come by the way.

At one point I thought about getting into WoE just to see what the fuss is about, but I've seen what it's done to people and I want no part of that lifestyle. On the other hand, I also know someone who found his RL wife through WoE and they're still going strong, so I guess it's not all bad.

I know. it was so horrible what that game did to those South Park kids

. though really, that game frightens me a bit. i think of it in the same way i think of cocaine.
