James Rodriguez Transfer News 2014: Real Madrid to Pay Fee of 80 Million Euros for Colombia Golden Boot Winner
James Rodriguez is very nearly a Real Madrid player.
The 23-year-old Colombian international will likely be unveiled on Tuesday, July 22, after a round of successful transfer negotiations.
Real Madrid will pay about 80 million euros ($108 million) for the World Cup 2014 Golden Boot winner, plus offer up a player to AS Monaco, Rodriguez’s former club, according to Spanish newspaper AS.
Previously, it was rumored that either Brazilian midfielder Casemiro or Diego Lopez will be traded, but AS reports that Diego Lopez does not want to leave Santiago Bernabéu. Monaco had asked about the availability of Pepe or Fabio Coentrao, but Los Blancos vetoed the move of either player.
According to Marca, Rodriguez will sign a six-year deal, and will earn 7 million euros ($9.5 million) net per season.
The attacking midfielder will wear the number 10 jersey, which was previously worn by Germany star Mesut Oezil.
Rodriguez will also supposedly stay at room no. 110 at the players’ residence in Valdebebas.
A move to Real Madrid has always been the Colombian star’s dream.
“Playing for Real Madrid is my life’s dream: it’d be a privilege to play alongside so many stars,” he said in an interview.
“If it happened, I’d enjoy it to the max.”
Rodriguez will not join the Real Madrid team immediately in the United States for their pre-season tour. Instead, he will link up with them on August 1, together with other players who were on World Cup duty like Karim Benzema and Raphael Varane.
