He's saying that it's good for his artistry and for any artist to have a balance between Pop and something more experimental. That's how you grow as an artist. If you try to only have big singles, you won't last. It's a "long war", you have to look at the big picture. He's also saying that his Pop sound helps his Experimental sound and his experimental sound helps his Pop sound.
