Hi everyone!

Since I was like the only one in the world who did not read the Harry Potter series as a kid...well, I'm reading it now! (25 and still young. at heart). I was like "I don't picture myself reading it at 78..so.."

I was surprised when I saw myself enjoying the thing!

I'm only at the 4th book (I've seen all the movies, though), I tried to rank the books so far and...well..I really liked The Chamber of Secrets...that seems like the most disliked.

So I want to see what ATRL thinks about the series!

Watch everyone pay the most innovative book in the series, Chamber of Secrets, dust.

I love all of them, but some were better executed than others.
For example, 7 had an awesome story but the middle dragged on.

In all honesty, the 6th one has to be the best. The chapters in which Harry witnessed Voldemort's story were fascinating and intriguing, the character development was amazing aswell. The movie was trash though.

Can someone please tell me why people dislike Chamber?
It's the only Harry Potter book that leaves us in suspense the whole time, and it's the only book to have mystery behind it.

We didn't know who the enemy was right till the very end.

Goblet of Fire though.

Hrm. Maybe I will start re-reading the series.

I probably read it dozens of times when I was younger, but it has been a few years.

A shame that HBP got the absolute WORST movie Followed by OOTP.

I love HBP for all the backstory and character development, and DH for Dumbledore/Grindelwald's story. And basically the whole Dumbledore arc in those two books. I'm gonna advise lawmak to stop reading here since I consider some of this a spoiler for anyone who hasn't read the 7th book, even if they've seen the movie. I always felt (story-wise) that Dumbledore needed to die, so I loved when it finally happened. Then I loved seeing him put under suspicion in DH, especially with the death of his sister/his screwed up family, and his own sketchy history with Muggle-relations. He needed flaws, and JK finally provided them. Plus the gay undertone to it is welcome.

Overall the backstory in both HBP and OOTP shows how Dumbledore and Voldemort both had flawed pasts and could've easily turned out as totally different people. JKR walked a very fine line of showing you WHY Voldemort is the way he is, but NOT making him a sympathetic character, because he ultimately chose to be a douche bag. Choosing "what is right over what is easy" is a major HP theme, and the juxtaposition of Dumbledore and Voldemort's backstories perfectly highlights that.

I re-read the series every summer and my stance on HBP being the best never changes!

I agree that the development of Voldemort's back story was one of the highlights of the entire series, perhaps second only to Dumbledore's character development in Deathly Hallows.

Goblet of Fire was the most singularly captivating book, but it does have a devastating plot hole.

6 > 7 > 5 > 4 > 3 > 2 > 1

With the movies is different, the first ones are the best ones for me.

I prefer the even numbered books over the odd numbered.

So 4, 6 and 2 are my favorites. My least favorites are the 3rd, and the 5th.

That's the same with Professor Quirrell (sp?) in PS, Peter Pettigrew is PoA, and Barty Crouch Jr. and Voldemort in GoF. There was the whole mystery regarding Malfoy's plan, Voldmort's background/Horcruxes, and Snape's allegiance in HBP and pretty much all of DH was the trio trying to figure out stuff so...

5 > 6 > 7 > 4 > 3 > 1 > 2

Same for the movies, basically.

But I really need to re-read these (again). I am sure my mind will change. I am a sucker for nostalgia, and TSS will always be in my top 3, but HBP and DH were fantastic in terms of writing and development.
