Pride is like any other street celebration in the city - people taking advantage of the event and having fun to the point where it's too much. Tell me one parade or event that is "classy" and "toned down". All types of people are in and out of the LGBT community and they come to the parade to celebrate sexual oppression. Of course there will be the stupid bimbos who are just an empty shell of superficiality, but who cares?
I agree 100%.
Don't understand why people are concerned with what straights think. Especially, when a decent chunk lump us together anyway.
Well, SF Pride seems to be largely straight people, so...I guess it's good that there are lots of straight people who are supportive, I suppose. There might be some # of them who are there to gawk/feel better about themselves cuz it makes them better people or whatever, but still.
So I guess it is safe to say, most of us see pride as a form of celebration and don't take it so serious. Also stating pride does not carry ambitions anymore?
But that happens with every historically related celebration. Every generation that celebrates slowly becomes disconnected from the entire point because they weren't there to experience the problems that started that celebration.
Pride is supposed to be an event where LGBT people can feel free to openly express themselves and not fear judgement. It's not about straight people accepting them. Majority of the time, gay people feel like they have to 'tone it down' because they're surrounded by mostly straights. With Pride they are around their own kind and don't have to worry about negative reactions. So I find it really ****ty when other LGBT people look down on the people who go to Pride parades because you're kind of missing the whole point.
Pride being a stream of acceptance is a whole another point to discuss. What I really see from today's youth is they claim to feel proud during the parade. Yet this gives birth to another question, do we not feel proud for the rest of the year?
I for one don't feel the need of a pride for that. But I know what it feels like to be in a pride and feel like you are the majority for the first time ever.
