So Kelis had songs prior to Bossy...and your point is? My point is that when Rihanna came along she absorbed a lot...not all... but a lot of artists fan bases such as Kelis, Ciara, Ashanti, ect...because Rih did/does all those things those artists do, but she did/does it even better. A lot of urban/R&B girls careers evaporated in Rihanna's wake, tbh. That's just fact.

Why do you think Kelis is so underrated... now if you was talking about India Arie or Erykah Badu then yes they are severely underrated. Kelis was just there...sputtering along until Rihanna mercifully ended her career for her! LOL!

I think it's because the problems she had with the release and promotion of 'Tasty' in the US. She ended the promotion prematurely in the US, because there were problems with the label (Arista/Star Trak). Her UK label (Virgin, I suppose) decided to keep supporting the album by releasing more singles ('Trick Me', 'Millionaire' and 'In Public'). She was building her UK/Europe fanbase.

After the 'Tasty' era was done, she continued to build her fanbase in there by releasing songs with Richard X and Enrique Iglesias. Both who were very popular in the UK at that time. She kind of abandoned the US it seems.

aw i never knew any of this. poor kelis.

like other people have also said, i don't think all the her vs. nas rumors helped either. (especially the one about her demanding 400k in child support)

There were problems with the labels from the start. 'Wanderland' was released in the UK/Europe in 2001, two years after 'Kaleidoscope', but never saw the light of day in the US. The US follow up to 'Kaleidoscope' was 'Tasty', released in 2003.

I'm a huge Kelis stan. My favorite album of hers is Flesh Tone. I like that she's not as public as other stars, as a lot of her music is an acquired taste. "Food" the album is really good as well if you sit down and listen to it from start to finish, it is very mellow. "Caught Out There" is still one of my favorite songs by her, I jam to it often.

"I Want Your Love" and "No Turning Back" would have smashed summer 2000.
