What church? Catholic? Did you go there with a partner and presented yourselves as a couple? Not trying to refute your point, because that's awesome, but I hope they weren't accepting you on the grounds of "hate the sin, not the sinner" because that mentality is mind-boggling. Imagine if someone used it to say "hate the murder, not the murderer". See what I mean? (I know being gay =/= murder, but they're both sins in the Bible). They probably live by not being judgmental and are actually forgiving people (which are hard Christians to find).

Would you rather they hate the sin
and the sinner? If they believe homosexuality is a sin, that's their belief. You can't tell people they're wrong and then tell them to accept you and expect it to be a very quick change in their entire belief system. The people who still love you in spite of your homosexuality aren't hindering the LGBT cause by holding their beliefs.
Your analogy with the murder is valid. Murder is an awful thing, but it's still possible to love somebody knowing that about them. It's a weird example, but if you've seen Orange is the New Black, there is a character who murdered a man that was physically and sexually abusing a little girl. Murder is still wrong, but to say that nobody should love that woman isn't right. She is still capable of being loved.
