That's interesting and makes sense. I just think it's interesting how people tend to connect more with people who look like them (without even knowing it, sometimes). And then others (such as myself) don't care about race at all. Where does the disconnect come from, I wonder?

Idk. I like expanding my taste. Sticking with my own race/culture and all that can get pretty boring.

Same with people in general having a romantic preference for their own race -- they see similarities with the prospective partner, and that just connects with them. It's bigger than any conscious decisions/intentions.

That being said, yeah it does kill me that people pay dust to Soul/R&B acts if they're black for the most part, but the "blue eyed soul" thing can shift tens of millions of copies in places where those genres are considered "local". Same (to a lesser degree) with a blonde barbie effortlessly snatching a BB#1 as a rapper with a flow/style that hasn't been successful in mainstream in like, 10 years. Or hell, even Janet regularly being erased in favor of Madonna from Britney's influence in the media, even when Britney herself credited her numerous times. Not to mention Aretha Franklin being "local" on this site, when people like Adele wouldn't be here without her. It seems like this system makes it the perpetual role of the black performer to set the trends which other races recreate and achieve more widespread popularity off of. I do relate to Beyonce because I am black, but it's not only about race. Music is colorless. If you enjoy their work, then you do. Regardless if you are white, black or asian.

Some very interesting comments in this thread but I noticed most people in here say this doesn't apply to them.

Is any one on ATRL gonna 'fess up? I know this applies to somebody.

People do that subconsciously. Some realize it, other don't.

True. I agree with what you said, music is colorless. I think the way it is presented and who the artist is presenting it has a lot to do with whether someone connects to it or not.

Well I'm black/latino and all three of my top faves are black or mixed like myself

I think it's more a stylistic thing in that case though; I like R&B music and powerful vocalists (in addition to powerful women/DIVAS), which usually comes in the form of women of color. The same could be said for other genres. If you like country music, purely on a sonic level, it is more likely that you will stan a white artist, as those are the ones who are commonly found in that genres.

I think is more about relate-ability + aspiration. Taylor S is so popular because people relate to her + want to be her. Same with Eminem. People also don't have much a choice in what they like. Most people who grow up with country music, like country music. It's easier to take in and enjoy things you have experience with.

Doesn't apply to me all that much since I'm Native American. None of my faves are natives.
People go with what's familiar to them while they were growing up.

edit: I should also say that I don't relate with my own tribe/culture because majority of the tribal members are thoroughly uneducated and lack any ambition.

When it comes to other people I can relate to them if we have the same things in common.
Vato and I are a thing and we are from two different cultures and nations.

I have no barrier personally speaking.
But I can totally understand why some might relate to someone the same race as them more.
