Why do people relate more to people of the same skin color?
Think about it. Is your fave the same skin color as you? Are most of the artists in your iPod the same color as you? I'm assuming yes @ a lot of you since most of ATRL is white and most of the girls ATRL stans for are white (with exceptions, of course).
TV shows with Black leads have more Black viewers (as proven by shows such as Scandal & RHOA which have more Black viewers than other shows on their networks). If there's a white person lead, the show will tend to have more white viewers. Latino leads attract more Latino viewers. In music, white people who never TOUCHED Hip-Hop eat it up when it's coming from Miley or Iggy.
Why is this? Does a person become more important when they're your skin color (or close to it)? Why does mainstream America connect easier with light-skinned people than dark-skinned people? Why does R&B/Soul music from Black artists go overlooked but it's acclaimed/super successful when a white person does it? Are you biased? Are you an exception? Be honest and discuss below.
Queen Rih is black and I'm not. I think it's because I'm a very like accepting and well-cultured person, so I don't see race. But I undastan your point gurl!
It makes sense in theory, like people gravitating towards others who they share something in common with, familiarity, etc.

It makes sense and doesn't make sense all at the same time. I suppose it's understandable someone will connect more with someone who looks like them, but why? Why does that matter?
It applies more to white people I think. If I could only relate with people of the same skin color I wouldn't relate to 90% of the stuff I see in TV/movies end. However things like the Hunger Games and Rues death show that some aren't near the same as me.
Jk, I should think it's pretty obvious; because we just do. We see ourselves in the artist (same reason males tend to stan males and women stan women, except when it's a male hey are attracted to), can identify with them, and often, they represent some aspect of what we want to be (we live vicariously through them).
It was found in psychological studies that whites have less empathy towards blacks, and that even blacks will show more empathy towards whites as well. I don't know about other races (why is it always a black-white thing? Only in America I guess). Anyway, maybe this has something to do with it. I don't know.
