Yeah, I think people just kinda assume Disco is a "lesser" genre even though it was WAY more progressive than Rock at the time.
But it eventually got to the point that enough was enough, even for disco acts (I saw the disco documentary on TVOne ). I always found the whole disco era intriguing. It actually has history to it, something I don't see today's sub-genres having.

I think that's mainly because it was born from racial and sexual minorities' communities, yet it was hugely successful too. It had a lot of stigma attached to it, but I guess it did get overplayed. It still is one of the most important times in mainstream music though since it birthed so many different dance and electronic genres.

Hip Hop, New Jack Swing, Disco and the Motown eras are the most intriguing sub-genres when reading the stories behind them.
