Sony didn't want them to rot, which is why they urged NaughtyDog and Insomniac to sell them rather than leave them behind.

Girl what're you talking about? Both Insomniac and NaughtyDog were in contract with Universal, as well as Sony, and Universal took most of the profit. So NaughtyDog and Insomniac decided to let both Spyro and Crash go, and now they're in the hands of Activision. However, I'm sure Sony good buy them back and let NaughtyDog/Insomniac make new games. I'd be here for the original developers making next gen platformers with the story carrying off after Crash/Spyro 3
