You never know. Cassie could have modeled herself after him by watching his action flicks (where I have no doubt he played the exact same archetype in every film) on the off chance he died before or soon after she was born.
Of course he's most likely alive during her childhood years, but I'm taking no chances on the story here since MK9's twist with Sindel completely annihilating everyone and Raiden 'accidentally' killing Liu Kang lol.
