I am not a big fan of Orbital's music as "albums" personally, besides Snivisilation and the Blue Album. But I like the songs individually.
In Sides is my least favorite, the only song on it I use is "The Girl with the Sun in her Head". Snivilisation, The Middle of Nowhere, The Blue Album, Altogether, and Wonky, are much better "Albums" in my opinion. In Sides is kind of like an afterthought album, I don't know why so many people including Producer Lone stanned for it. Albeit The Girl with the Sun in her Head clearly inspires a lot of his work.
So yes, I think Wonky is the easier gateway, but besides it's records having some kind of keen ability to inject emotion and happiness into the listener like nothing else, it is not much like the rest of their music.
The live versions slay, but they aren't really that necessary tbh. I'm probably one of the biggest Orbital fans in the world (I say this with full confidence, from 5 years old been a fan) and I do not use the Live versions of their songs often.
If you don't find Halcyon (Original) beautiful, or You Lot inspiring, then they would be difficult to get into.
Awesome! Thanks!
I figured a fan would be the best to ask about this since critic reviews can sometime get caught up on things other than the actual music. I don't know if that makes sense or not.
But I'm downloading Wonky right now. I'll just download the live songs later on when I really get hooked. I know I'll like these guys since I like British electronic music a lot and these guys seem right up my alley.
And I bought In Sides at my record store for $1 because I had heard good things about the group. It was just really hard to get into. It's not that I didn't like it, it just went in one ear and out the other I think because my copy is around 2 hours long.
Also, thanks for the songs to listen to. I'm catching up on Scandal right now, I'll come back later in an hour or so and give them a good listen.

Cool. It's best in headphones and over ya ears. It isn't music that you play over speakers at first.
Unless you're tripsy and driving near the beach at night with a moonroof as I so often am.
Just finished listening with a pair of nicer headphones. I'm into these. I got absorbed into Halcyon (Original), the 9 minutes flew by.
I think I more actively enjoyed You Lot slightly more after 2 listens, the style changes in the song were very impressive and it's easy to groove along to.
I'm going to have to make a trip to the record store soon honestly.

Right. The part that get's me is at 1:45.
On new years eve, playing that song in the car on full blast with a full friend Driving down the beach.
It really makes you feel like you're on top of the world at the right moment.
Hey so I downloaded Wonky and finally got around to listening. I listened to it a couple times and I really liked it, it's going to be in my regular rotation for a while.
For now, I think out of the 9 tracks, 7 are really strong. The only tracks that took me out of the album a little bit were the title track and the dubstep track, I don't know if they were pushing their boundaries (which I respect), but the transition was a little jarring (still solid though) compared to the rest of the album for me.

OMG YES!
That is exactly it. Wonky is listenable but Beelzedub is absolutely jarring.
I hate it so much on the album, but I also hate Dubstep.
Off the album though, I actually like the track. And I hate dubstep!!!
Wonky is just annoying and underwhelming for the title track.
My favorites are the more classic orbital tracks:
One Big Moment, Never, Straight Sun, Never, New France, Stringy Acid, and Where is it Going
But it's pretty solid though, since I only dislike two out of the rest of the tracks. I still play it straight through in the car.

I've been listening to Wonky more and it's completely solid. You're right I take the two tracks out of the context of the album and listen to them individually and they're solid.
Listening to Beelzedub right now and I'm not a huge fan of dubstep either (unless its dubstep like Burial) but it's a good time. I also just noticed the pun in the title when I typed it out and have to give a for the title.

Lmao that's so cute of you to just notice
Im glad you picked it up. Im gonna order another physical. The first time it was like $50
maiko! I just wanted to say that I finally made it down to the record store and picked up a copy of Snivilisation and the Altogether. They were about $2each so I feel like I got a steal.
Haven't listened to them yet. But I'm looking forward to it though. The Altogether has 2 CDs and is about 2 hours long so it might take me awhile to get to that one.

Wow! You're amazing.
What is the name of the record store you went to? It's crazy that they actually carried them. I always have to order my orbital physicals from Amazon

Sorry for the late reply, I got a ton of new music to listen to and it's been hard getting through everything. I got the stuff from Amoeba, it's a huge store in LA. It's pretty amazing, the problem was that I got way too much music. Still working on my list actually haha.
I just recently took a listen to Snivilisation. I have no idea how to pronounce the name, but it was amazing. It was definitely my favorite Orbital record so far. I listened on my laptop speakers which are pretty awful, but it was still really engaging.
Honestly, I think it sounded much more current and fresh than Wonky. Definitely excited to listen again as soon as I catch up with my listening list.

haha it's okay. I'm subscribed to this thread so it e-mails me whenever anyone posts
you summoned me of sorts. and its so odd because I was listening to Orbital when you posted and I hadn't listened in a while.
Snivilisation is my favorite Orbital album, and Attached is my favorite song from it. I listen to it during my morning bikes, that and Kein Trink Wasser. Are We here (the half with the vocals, starting at 8:20 into the song) is a classic Orbital song. Either way, it's definitely better than Wonky. The only classic Orbital songs Wonky are One Big Moment, Straight Sun, and Never. Everything else is kinda new for them.
So surprised you got into that album without headphones! Sniv is really ambient and I usually need headphones to get into the feels.
Oh Maiko, I read it all a few days ago. If this is truly their end, I know their legacy will live on due to fans like you and I hope they continue to deliver through their solo projects.
