As grating as I found "Applause" when it was first released (it was an acquired taste, which lead singles can't afford to be, imo - they need to instantly grab your attention), it really was the best (and only) option they had for a lead single. As much as she apparently wanted "Aura" (which that revelation alone just... We really dodged a bullet there), that song would not have done her any favors.
Also... As much as her fans like to tell themselves Venus would have been a massive hit, it really would have been a disastrous flop for her. (Again, we dodged a bullet here - Troy knew what he was doing)

Y'all keep forgetting that the tracklist wasn't final til like 3 weeks b4 album release, she might've had some unreleased material that would've slayed as first single.

Hmm he probably did nothing of the sort and Gaga was being an egotistical control freak.

Some of y'all thinking that Gaga (or any artists) should just release the biggest hits from the album and then slow down.
When an artist is crafting an "era", it shouldn't entirely be based around "which songs will hit #1 the fastest with the strongest lead?", it should be based around "which songs will give me success while also allowing me to express the imagery and themes on the album clearly?". Honestly, one of the the worst parts about the business part of the music industry is that the concept of “it’s okay if this album/song isn’t as big as the last one” doesn’t exist apparently.
If I was a label executive, I would never say "NO, GAGA. THERE IS NO WAY YOU WILL RELEASE "VENUS". YOU WILL RELEASE "DO WHAT U WANT" AND "GYPSY" AND THEN END THE ERA". I would realize that "Venus" has as much a chance of succeeding as it does of flopping, and put it out. If it succeeded, then great, we've got another hit for Gaga's catalog, while also sticking with what she wanted. If not, we allow to song to die a bit, then organize a promotional plan with Gaga for "Do What U Want" to regain the momentum.
You notice how The Fame and The Fame Monster were her most organized eras? It's because her and her label collaborated to make sure a middle meeting ground where Gaga and the label agreed on single choices as long as she was able to honor her creativity was met. I would say some of the Born This Way era and most of the ARTPOP era didn't get to that meeting ground, and that's why they were messy.

DWUW shouldve been the lead single. wouldve gone #1, introduced the era as a fresh new sound from gaga.
Applause was i think the second best option, although tbh Venus couldve done better idk.. it has a Bad Romance quality that couldve stuck with people: "dont u know my ass is famous!" etc

Stop including Venus as a potential single. This **** would have flopped even harder than G.U.Y. Jesus.........

Manicure could have been a s single if she had not ruined it with her vocals. Dope could have been a single if she had not ruined it with her vocals.

Do What U Want should have been the lead single, maybe featuring someone like idk Usher or Trey Songz or even better Justin Timberlake rather than R. Kelly. Then Gypsy around mid-October. Both would have been at least decent hits. And then she could have tried with Applause, MANiCURE or Venus.

The only lead single material songs on ARTPOP are Gypsy, """Aura""" and Applause. If she started an era called ARTPOP with a song about being angry with how the media treats her like DWUW it would be anticlimatic. Nobody is saying that DWUW isn't the biggest hit on the album, but it just doesn't work as a lead single.
The era should've gone:
1st singles: Gypsy and Aura like planned, Aura being more promo single than actual lead single, but with Telephone sequel treatment.
2nd single: Sexxx Dreams just after SwineFEST
3rd single: DWUW just before album release, Venus and Dope as promo singles
4th single: MANiCURE, G.U.Y. or Fashion! depending on the sound that is going on at the moment, for January/February 2014
5th single: Applause as the last single just when the tour starts.
Applause and Gypsy can be interchanged. I'm sure Sexxx Dreams and DWUW could've make the GP be perched for the album, unlike what really happened with the era, Applause in August and then let the era die until DWUW in November. If the era succeded this way, she could've released Act II as a repackage this summer with other 2 singles.

The thing is, I'm not against the idea of "Gypsy" or "Do What U Want" being singles, it's that I wouldn't want them to be the lead single bc 1) neither of them represent the album's overall sound well and 2) neither of them would be able to decently introduce the "Disney Princess High Phoenix" aesthetic or the "Koons Goddess of Love" aesthetic well in their music videos.

If ARTPOP was perfect, no drunk vocals, no ruined songs, I Wanna Be With You(>>>>>>>>..>Dope) was still there, Gypsy was not produced by a 18 years old kid, not changes on Manicure, then properly held, the era would have been a success.
Lead single( August-November)- DWUW- a great song. new sound for Gags.
Second Single(NovemberFebruary)- I Wanna Be With You- a song about missing someone, being in love etc. Everyone listens to this kind of songs in winter, or on christmas when you miss someone etc. Who doesnt love ballads?
Third single(February-May)- Manicure. Lets moveeeeeeee. Some dancing
Fourth Single(May-August)- Sexxx Dreams- if it is hit, great, if it flops- who cares, fourth single
Fifth Single(August-November)-Applause- a summer hit tbh.
Sixth and final single-- Gypsy. The best single to end the era
Maybe we can switch DWUW and Applause's places tho.

"Applause" perfectly did it's job as a lead single. It did fine on radio, sold well enough in the US, and was top 10 for over 3 months, not to mention it became her highest viewed video since "Judas". It also allowed Gaga to introduce the album's sound accurately (I won't talk about how she was able to "express herself" due to her statements regarding the video). The only mistake made during the "Applause" era was deciding not to promote it WW, or at all during September and October.

The lead single situation is so old and so irrelevant right now. Ya'll better check iTunes, there's a surprise for you.
