You have to remember the origin of the bibles, and who wrote them. A lot of what went in there was what some people thought, but you can interpret it your own way.
The way my mother (and I guess my parents) take the bible is more of a moral compass, in a way. They know what's right in the bible, and what is really ridiculous and isn't to be followed since it's an archaic view.
I think people who oppose those who are religious is that there is some sort of absolute. You follow everything, or you follow nothing. You can deduce that there are good passages, and bad passages. Combine those metaphors (since the bible has a lot of them), incorporate it to modern days, and shape yourself to be a better person. At the end of the day, everyone wants to be a good person, and some use the bible as a guide, while others find guides elsewhere.
