English people have respect for football, so when they use that, we know its just a regional term with them. With Americans its a different story. They often use the term in a derogatory way. Thats why also English fans are stopping to use it and thats why many people are pissed off when Americans (meaning USA ofc) are using it. But keep using it outside of US if you want a beating that badly

Americans call football soccer and that's it. If they call it football that's an affected use of the word. I use the word soccer in normal conversation so as not to confuse the sport with American football, as most Americans do.
And I have no idea who uses the word "soccer" in a derogatory way or how you could even do so. That's like saying Midwesterners use the word "pop" in a derogatory way.
It's their word for the object
