I'm just making sure that we're all in agreement that ARTPOP under-performed because of Lady Gaga's damaged brand + whatever bad marketing/promotion decisions made throughout the era. I seriously think she could have actually done moderately well if she had chosen the right singles to perform with good videos and live performances. The songs aren't that bad...
1. Aura Leak / Machete Kills
Why Lady Gaga didn't do a Paparazzi/Telephone/Aura continuation is behind me. The song sounds very chaotic but in recognizably Gaga's style ala Bad Romance/Judas/Americano. not only that, but she incorporated the song with the Machete Kills commercial, and although the film didn't perform well it still would have been a solid marketing push to make this the continuation with Beyonce and have a crazy video filmed for it. The chorus 'Do you wanna see me naked, lover?
Do you wanna peek underneath the cover?' Is easily one of her most infectious in recent years.
The lyrics and beat SCREAM Gaga. Why it wasn't released as the second single is just beyond me. The sexual innuendos and chants reminds me a lot of her earlier works and still just as catchy. I think with a proper video (Bad Romance meets Poker Face on Venus?) or some Greek mythology themed video would have worked out well.
The rest of the single orders don't particularly matter, and the different combination of songs she could have played at swine-fest is a moot point, but somewhere in this era somebody made the WRONG decision and I have no idea who.
Was it Lady Gaga? Troy Carter? Her Label Interscope? Her Fans? The GD? Combination of people?
Why did ARTPOP underperform? Keep it cute please I really wanna know. I could be wrong but I think it's mainly Gaga/Troy/Label fights
Gaga planned the entire underperformance as an artistic piece about the decay of the blonde superstar.
It was all part of the reverse Warholian experience.
Announcing the album half a year before it's release.
Performing half the album months before the albums comes out.
The music isn't as good as her previous albums.
Pretentious promotion.
Messy leaks.
The GP left her after her "long" break.
Giving up on the era half-way through.
It was the music itself, I think. It's neither very radio-friendly nor that artistic; she failed to receive both success and critical acclaim and eventually tanked.
Gaga can come across very opinionated, well spoken and pretentious. She knows what she wants, she knows what she's talking about, and she's very passionate. She's also very stubborn due to her high beliefs in her work and vision. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, generally people just don't warm to people who show a sense of arrogance.
Gaga used to show her insecurities a lot more on the outside, and she was very mysterious and people were intrigued. Fast-forward a couple of years and the woman could literally rant for an hour.
Yes, there were problems with management and the era in general, but the music is okay. People are just not as attracted to her as they used to be.
I could write pages and pages so let me just stop there.
