Discussion: Weight Still A Factor In Music?

Is weight still a factor to success in the music business? is being being big in Hollywood's size standerds a problem and does it effect commercial success? Of course there are a plethora of singers who have had success even though they may be considered "big" in hollywoods Barbie sized standards ex: Beyoncé, Adele, Jennifer Hudson, Demi Lovato and Nicki Minaj .

Lets delve into this a bit further.

Christina Aguilera:

Once known as the "petite blonde with a huge voice" she started gaining weight rapidly after the birth of her child and with that started having lackluster sales although still having critical acclaim. As soon as she lost weight she scored her first hit in over 8 years were she is not the featured artist "Say Something".

Lady Gaga:

Once the high fashioned petite italien with the creative mind of Picasso and Beethoven (as some media outlets would say) she soon started having lackluster sales although still making relatively good music. W can see her decline started in the Born This Way era were she I fact started gaining weight due to the fact that she would eat a lot more at her fathers restaurant and not be able to move and perform as much due to her famous hip injury. it also seems that less high end fashion designers are begging to have her dressed in their clothing. Perhaps that has to do with te fact that she has gained weight? for an artist who is and was introduced to the world as being a fashionista that is bold and daring her weight gain can sure be a reason for her declining popularity. unfortunately

Rihanna:

Rihanna has always bee known for her athletic body and svelt legs but during her 2009 era Rated R the singer gained some weight for a number of reasons. This resulted in her least commercially successful era although it being her most criticly acclaimed to date. She still managed to score a number 1 hit and two top 10's but it was a big fall from her previous era "GGGB" and as soon as she started re-toning her body the coming era "Loud" was one of her most commercially viable and successful.

Britney Spears:

Britney Spears has many reasons as to why she is no longer selling records but we can accord her image change as being one of them unfortunately. as soon as she gained weight after the Cricus era after having lost some weight from the Blackout era she started to experience less album sells.

Mariah Carey:

Mariah Carey is unmistakably one of the LEGENDS in music and lik all legends must experience commercial downfalls but Mariah has had so many eras that havnt done too well on the charts and numbers side to ignore. Billboard themselves reportedly shaded Mariah and claimed that her age and image is no longer one of a desirable female singer and so that effects her sales. Also if we look at her Glitter and Charmbracelet era's during those two album era's she had started gaining weight and both have been some of her lest successful to date. her newest album has unfortunately sold under 200k to date in the US and this could be once again accorded to her image change.

is weight gain still a factor in determining chart success in the world..i'd say "yes" unfortunately

what do you think? do you think this is fair and that this pattern has gotten worse or has it gotten better and there are less "big/fat" shaming? in the media now a days?
is the artist initially being presented as thin and then gaining weight the problem? or is it just that the GP do not consider it desirable anymore?

It isn't, it's all about how you use it. When you're not skinny and force yourself into skimpy outfits it turns people off. This doesn't just apply to weight, even if you have a body that isn;t "attractive" whether it's too veiny or whatever most people wanna avoid seeing you revealing outfits. and they will get attacked for it.

Doesn't affect the music though.

no look at Adele, she isnt stick thin like Miley or in super shape like Kesha but she has probably outsold them all and is more respected overall

Lady Gaga's weight gain and decline in chart success is a COINCIDENCE, her music videos and performances still had a skinny Lady Gaga in them.

"Designers don't wanna dress her" The woman is under contract with Versace, she doesn't need to go anywhere else and she still wears diff. designers but she always sticks to one designer.

because I just remember a time probably 2009-200 were everyone was talking about how amazing her fashion was and not making a joke out of it. now ppl drag her and I don't thnk you cant deny that it is artly because of her weight. like you had mentioned earlier or was it another member idk someone said that its the fact that its a "big" girl in small latex outfits that bother the GP

Yes it's her choice.

No one in fashion is mocking her or her weight, the last time she stepped on a red carpet she was PRAISED for her fashion choices and looks.

Don't confuse people on ATRL and Tumblr. with fashion critics.
