So I'm off to college this fall, and I'm trying to find out which laptop to purchase in preparation. I'm thinking either a MacBook Pro or a MacBook Air. Tips or advice?
MacBook Air will give you more battery life (12 hours, usually more), and weighs less. It's screen is also less reflective. It also has a higher than the 1200 x 800 standard resolution.
MacBook Pro is much heavier, will only last around 5 hours, has a super reflective screen, but has the disc drive. The screen is standard, though. But you get a 500GB HDD in the price. The other two only have 128GB standard, and cost more to upgrade.
MacBook Pro Retina should only be purchased if you're going to do intense video/photo editing. It will be no faster than a MacBook Air for everyday stuff, it weighs more, has less battery life (around 7 hours, Apple claim more but it doesn't if you use the net heavily) and the Retina screen looks good but unless you're doing editing of some kind, it mostly won't change the experience.
I'd say;
MacBook Air > MacBook Pro > MacBook Pro Retina (when you consider the price).
Only get the Retina if you wanna do editing, otherwise choose between the standard Pro and the Air. But I think the Air wins, unless you prefer the Pro design and Disc Drive.
I got the Pro a few weeks ago and wish I got the Air tbh. My friend has the Air, and I don't need what the Pro gives me.
Charging your laptop after like 5 - 7 hours of use (I only get what Apple advertise if I barely use the Net), when he gets like 15 hours from his no matter what he seems to do
I got a Macbook Air literally last Tuesday, my first Macbook, and I can't recommend it highly enough. It is seriously the best laptop I've ever owned. Unless you need the extra power/resolution of the MBPro Retina then there's no reason to pick it over the Air imho
MacBook Pro is where it's at. You will look classy.
Although, treat it well because I've had mine for like just now coming on to a year, and it's already ratchet. I want to get another one soon.

Yeah I suggest getting yourself a nice case and keyboard cover to help preserve and prolong it's beauty
I recommend the STM Grip. I have a pink one and it's flawless.
