But generally, the more risky a single is, the more divisive and controversial it will be amongst members of the general public.
Man Down was atypical of the general trends in music of 2010/2011, but songs in the style of Man Down, aka reggae-pop music, had been done before by other popular artists for years. So while it was risky in the sense that it wasn't a guaranteed hit at the time, it also wasn't a song that would alienate anyone away from Rihanna in any capacity if they didn't happen to like the song.
