I think there's several reasons why Avril isn't as popular these days...

- The complete U-turn in image between Under My Skin and The Best Damn Thing. Literally, she had this mature/gothic look in 2004/05, disappeared for 2 years and it was like seeing a different person (even though I loved TBDT era and album, I can see why fans were frustrated).

- The risk payed off as Girlfriend was huge! However, that era lacked cohesiveness. She released WYG as the second single, which was a bad idea! She went from the fun/care-free look of GF to a more serious look in WYG. The second single should have been Runaway, WYG as the third single - then end the era with either Contagious or Hot.

- The real deal breaker was the hiatus she took (through no fault of her own) between the end of TBDT era and releasing GL. I think the GP literally forgot she existed.

- Signing with Epic was perhaps the biggest mistake of them all! Terrible record label with terrible management. I believe with a different label, and a fresh sound and image she could easily be very successful again!

Not giving in to RCA and recording WTH in 2009 instead of 2011.

I was thinking about TBDT the other day. Funny, I read Rolling Stone's interview and they concluded it with "Avril can't get away with this sound for another album again, so enjoy it now." And boy were they right. TBDT wasn't a misstep but she let it define her career too much I feel. She tried to recreate it with WTH when she shouldn't have. She shouldn't have signed to Epic and thus not have had to endure a 4 year break, and a new sound for Goodbye Lullaby. Although it doesn't help that radio wasn't here for rock or pop rock at ALL that year.

No growth or development? Have you listened to the non-single tracks on GL or AL?

Besides, there are A TON of pop girls out there who haven't progressed their sound in years.

Also, didn't Taylor Swift go "more pop" with Red? How come it's okay for Taylor to adapt to pop, while it's not okay for Avril?

What's wrong with rawness?

Boring? Would you rather have an upbeat, bratty Avril, or a deep, introspective Avril?

And how can Avril's singles be considered generic or dated when JT's Mirrors sounds like it came from 2006, and much of Katy Perry's discography has Max Martin's fingerprints all over it?
