In the photo that Maya Peterson posted of herself to Instagram in March when she was a senior, she poses as a typical “Lawrenceville boi” — wearing a Yale sweatshirt and duck boots, holding a hockey stick. It's hashtagged #romney2016, #confederate, and #peakedinhighschool.

“I understand why I hurt people's feelings, but I didn't become president to make sure rich white guys had more representation on campus,” Peterson, who graduated from the private school near Princeton, New Jersey, in June, tells Buzzfeed, which reported the story on Monday. “Let’s be honest. They're not the ones that feel uncomfortable here.”

Peterson, a lesbian, tells Buzzfeed that the controversy over her leadership started long before the Instagram photo, with cries from some students suggesting that the election she'd won had been fixed. She caught flak later in the year, she explains, for raising her fist in a “black power” salute along with several other students for a yearbook photo.

Fellow Lawrenceville students seem torn over the situation. One told Buzzfeed Peterson’s actions seemed “hateful,” while another called her “a great face of the New Lawrenceville.”

“I’m not saying what I did was right,” Peterson tells Buzzfeed. “But it wasn’t racist. I was just calling those guys exactly what they are. And Lawrenceville is the type of place where those kids are idolized.”

You can be racist against white people. There is more history for the opposite situation which is far worse, but while this is not oppressive behavior it is racist. She was in the wrong.

Context is key vin, you can't say this like it's a 50/50 thing. I'm certain that the circumstance is, white people are represented and black students are underrepresented. So if a white girl made the comment
1. It wouldn't even make sense.
2. It implies she is not here for equality and anti-discrimination

but I don't really agree with her generalizations. I mean its very easy to go and make these stereotypes, but as a figurehead we shouldn't be promoting stereotypes as correct.

And I still dint understand how the post is making fun of white people, she's dragging "Lawrenceville boys". Obviously white people are the only people voting for Romney and would be he only ones hash tagging confederacy but that does not apply to all white people so neither does her post.

Some European Americans in 2014 are trying it complain about "racism" towards them. It's like if one girl says my mom just died and another girl tries to compare it to her goldfish dying. You just roll your eyes at them and keep moving,
