Not to say it's been a LONG time since MTV last decided the winners considering the actual best video. They either go for the biggest Hot 100 hit, the alternative artist, the most singer successful of the year or the biggest icon of the group. This time they went by the last option. Lucky Britney.

I agree. It's not the first time that the best video don't win an award. I think people complain just because it's britney.
Just a few examples:
- 2000: The Real Slim Shady wining Best Video over Californication.
- 2001: Lady Marmalade wining Best Video over "Weapon Of Choice" by Fat Boy Slim & and "Stan" by Eminem.
- 2003: "Crazy In Love" by Beyonce wining Best Female Video over "Work It" by Missy Elliot even when Missy won Video Of The Year

. Missy wasn't enough Female to win Best Female Video too

- 2004: Naughty Girl wining Best Female over Toxic (the only female video nominated for video of the year).
Britney didn't attend to the awards that night.
- 2005: Since U Been Gone wining Best Female over Hollaback Girl (the only female video nominated for Video Of The Year).
I read that Gwen confirmed she was attending to the awards in the last minute, while Kelly was performing there that night.
