The government will now submit bills to parliament in the autumn for the changes to take effect. Abe has sought since taking office in December 2012 to bolster Japan’s security stance amid a territorial dispute with an increasingly assertive China and concerns about the strength of the country’s alliance with the U.S. He increased the defense budget after 11 years of decline, passed an unpopular law toughening penalties for leaking state secrets, and loosened restrictions on defense exports.
Abe’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party and New Komeito earlier agreed on the resolution before it was put to cabinet.
The resolution permits the use of a minimum amount of force to defend another country under attack if that nation has close ties with Japan, according to a draft of the document distributed earlier to reporters. That right may only be exercised if the attack poses a threat to Japan’s existence and if there is no other way of protecting Japanese people, according to the draft.

Good, they need to be allowed to build up a defensive force. Who's going to come to their defence against China when it decides to expand its boarders? I'm sure if they act up with their army the USA will soon come in and destroy another one of their cities.
The US would not go to war with China unless they Chinese were pouring into California or something, both countries would be economically destroyed by that war.
No country besides North Korea would ever try to invade Japan perhaps if there's a new Soviet-Union they have the right to have their own army, imo. They haven't done the bad things the US has done in the PRESENT.

China wasn't the one who raised hell upon the entire Asia-Pacific resulting in carnage on the order of magnitude that made the Holocaust look like child's play. Anyone who has the SLIGHTEST idea of what happened in Asia during WWII knows that Japan CANNOT be allowed to have an army. If you think Nazi Germany was bad, which undoubtedly it was, Japan was bad on whole other order of magnitude. Your average German soldier would not have a woman raped while watching her children being slaughtered right in front of her. This was happening countless times on a daily basis. Crime against humanity were committed for absolutely no practical reasons, but just for the sakes of it. This is deeply rooted into Japan's ****ed up culture, which is why they have absolutely no remorse for what they did, then and to this day. You would not want to see a ruthless mass murderer who shows no remorse back into your neighborhood. Likewise, a country of barbarians who has proved to be capable of committing the worst crimes imaginable for fun should not be allowed to possess force of any kind.

The fact German soldiers did not feel the need to slaughter every woman and child they came across and wipe out every single town they walked past? The fact German soldiers did not force a mother to watch children being slaughtered while being tortured and raped? The fact most POWs of Germany were at least treated like human beings and managed to survive while those of Japan were tortured and died an agonizing death? The fact Germany did not attempt to remove its crimes from history books and actually show genuine signs of remorse?

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the notion that 1945 Japan = 2014 Japan.

I don't think developed countries need an army, tbh, but I guess if they ever had an invader (For whatever reason.) it'd be too late to organize an army. We're entering an age where wars between countries won't be fought with soldiers anymore, though.

Germany is allowed to participate in NATO and so I think Japan should really take a stronger role in East Asia and not only rely on US
