She has sold over 90 million albums worldwide, making her one of the best-selling artists of all time. She is the 3rd best selling Latin artist of all time.
Aaliyah:

She is listed by Billboard as the 27th most successful R&B artist in history.
Selena was the biggest female Hispanic singer of her time. Her and Gloria Estefan being the only other female artist prior to to pave the way and help make women in the Latin markets to the forefront. She's won many Latin music awards, as well as being named the biggest Latin artist of the 90s by billboard.
Though we never got to truly experience how big she could've gotten in English markets, her death helped bring the Latin music trend of the late 90s-early 00s. Which helped birth artists such as Ricky Martin, Shakira, Enrique Iglesias, Jennifer Lopez, Paulina Rubio, etc. Impact, influence is what made her a legend.
Now with this I'm not Aaliyah is or is not a legend, I'm simply stating how Selena is a legend.

You're forgetting that Selena also won a Grammy, but other than that... good write up.
Aaliyah keeps the girls SEETHING, they don't understand how a girl in the industry for SEVEN years had her success even with flop management, the R Kelly scandal and not only have impact in music but fashion without ever reaching her peak
Selena had more impact, plus since she sang in Spanish so her music was a phenomenon in all of Latin America (a lot of countries that speak Spanish/bigger market for her music) where as Aaliyah was more of a U.S artist

Not Aaliyah having "basic" music that changed nothing yet many of her songs are credited as "innovative" changing R&B and birthing Urban Pop

OK. Can you name a few other "electro R&B soul" albums?
"Are You That Somebody" and "Try Again" being Aaliyah's only recognizeable hits... she did virtually nothing for the music industry to move it forward.
