If you think about it, societies in every corner of the globe accommodated effeminate males by putting them in a third gender: males with a feminine gender identity. This is true for Native Americans (North and South), Pacific Islanders, Thailand, parts of Africa, etc. If it weren't for the West's everything-outside-the-norm-phobia, we would probably have become our own gender category. I think part of that reveals itself in our use of feminine gender pronouns online and such. Of course, we "settled" for identifying by just our sexuality due to social pressure but it still makes you wonder...
