Why Sam Smith and not John Newman?
Why did Sam blow up in the US and John Newman was paid dust?

Maybe Sam's voice is more exceptional and distinctive but their styles are quite alike. Plus he had global exposure due to Disclosure and Naughty Boy.

Sam had a range of hits (La La La, Latch, Stay With Me) which he used to enter the US at around the same time.
John only had one. I'm not really sure, but I think that Sam having multiple hits helped him.

It's the same for the rest of the world, not just the US.
Not counting Feel The Love, John only had one hit anywhere, and his album didn't do all that well either.
