The government merely stated that schools must teach, as far as I know, 1 hour of religious education every fortnight. How that is fitted into the curriculum is up to each individual school.
I'm not going to state specific subjects that are more/less important in schools, it's not my call but I simply don't believe that religion is less important than other subjects.
Religious education IS good. Proper religious education doesn't force religion onto students, but informs them of religions, their beliefs and how they work to allow students to make their own choices and to breed religious tolerance. And as for the last comment, I think the American education system has quite some way to go, my friend.

it certainly is good. But unfortunately, when there are options, choices, and differences, human nature makes one rank things; there will always be the slight bit of minute prejudice. Equality is a concept that exists and can happen, but doesn't always when it comes to things other than quantities. This very same behavior is why this thread exists, and makes the topic, like all ideas, futile to some degree.
And the US education system is the most superb. It's why the main prestige is here. If otherwise, it would be elsewhere. Simply, the students IN the US system fail it and that makes it problematic since ppl then go to questioning teachers and curriculums, etc. But that all boils down to the individuals themselves and their upbringings (AKA why, UK has a lesser education system, seems more successful b/c it has better students b/c they're essentially "better" people due to their imposed morality, or upbringing, and that influences how and how much they think critically).
Science is obviously needed because it's just a description of why things are how they are. Religion is a different take on it, makes life easier to cope with, and is also a justification of science to some extent. And because it's less factual it's also ultimately less important, even though as people it's very important in our culture. But we're all culturally different, from household to household, so the more important matter is things we can all mutually agree upon and understand.
but lemme stop slayin tho
