The World Cup, despite being hosted by Brazil, is an international event with a global audience of spectators. The expectation of English being spoken in there is in line with previous ATRL policy and is based on the fact that it is the most widely spoken language amongst the members who may partake in the thread.

I think while the games are on people should be allowed to say some phrases in their languages because at the moment you're so excited that you want to scream something in your mother language; but basically the threads are meant in English, as it is the principal language of ATRL, so nobody should abuse the use of other language.

Because the World Cup is held in Brazil that gives you the right to speak Portuguese on an English speaking forum? That logic is lost on me.

Like I said a few times: There are dedicated threads for certain languages in the Lounge. All the other threads are English. That's the way it's always been, and the World Cup thread is no exception.

We have been talking portuguese on that thread since the first game, there is literally no problem in that. It's so unnecessary and dumb. We should be able to talk our languages

There have been multiple occasions where there were just a few posts in another language and I didn't make a big deal out of it. Now however, no game was on and half of a page was in Portuguese only.

This has never been the case on ATRL though.
Like I said, the few occasonal posts were fine with me. Half a page was filled though. That was just too much.

We have always done it in Football threads, now that is popular(and you're posting) we can't do it?

It's not a new policy, and this thread is not exempt from standard policy. I don't see how that doesn't make sense.

We're done here, and Phoenetic was in the right. It's one thing if there's a passing post in a language other than that spoken by the majority of participants; it's entirely another for the language to pervade the thread.

If the situation absolutely, necessarily calls for the use of a certain language, then theoretically use is entirely permissible - however, barring those specific instances in which other-language discussion may be warranted, I'd advise you to stick to the default of English outside of the specifically marked Lounge threads. Using the World Cup thread as an example: if your audience or the members involved are likely to be predominantly English speaking people, don't use other languages.

Like I said: I personally have no problem with the occasional post in another language (In the World Cup thread only!), but technically that's also not okay. But I'm not going to warn the occasional post in another language.
