Often when women reject feminism while claiming to agree with its precepts (as Lana does here) they are revealing a fear of being thought of as lesbian or perhaps unfeminine. Women are largely socially conditioned to please, not cause too much of a ruckus, and forward the interests of others over themselves. The Adichie TED Talk quote . . . “We teach girls to shrink themselves . . .” This is one of the reasons explaining gender based work/salary discrepancies. From the gate, men often negotiate higher salaries, because assertiveness, disruptiveness , blinding ambition etc., are qualities that are by and large appreciated in men but not as often, in women. Society often rewards women who perform gender stereotypes well; so, a woman making demands for the sake of achieving equality with men or raising her voice in protest against systemic oppression flies in the face of what women are taught to do . . . shrink themselves.
There are always exceptions to the rule, like Lana who will probably always be cossetted by wealth and privilege, but for most women, there's going to come a point where they will get a "feminist wake-up call" (similar to the Ni99a wake-up call). For women like Shailene Woodley, it'll happen when they start pushing 35-40, and they can't get movie roles, while the men their age work steadily. It'll happen if you've had a kid and feel compelled to drop out of the workforce because you make less than your partner, and your salary will be negated by the cost of childcare. It'll happen when if you're one of the few women in STEM (since Lana's so interested in science). It may even happen, if God forbid, you get sexually assaulted, and you're blamed for what you were wearing. But somewhere along the line, if you're a woman, sexism will happen to you, and that's why feminism is necessary.
