Just imagine if albums were free. It wouldn't necessarily lead to more exposure because it would all still be relative. Every artist out there might have greater sales than 3 million copies, but you will still have the same artists having more exposure that they already have now. Also, music would suffer in quality. If I were an artist and not making any money on my art, then I might just throw whatever crap out there that I wanted to make and also, because music then becomes crap, touring will in the end lose money, because if the music is crap, people aren't going to buy tickets for the tour.
There has to be an incentive to make music to begin with. And it keeps the artist honest (If I want to sell albums, then damn, I better make a good album to sell, if I am going to sell a lot). It is the same with products. If all the bread makers decided to give away their bread for free, the market for bread would become bankrupt and no one would want to make bread anymore. It is simple market supply and demand.
