Despite being one of the largest and most powerful nations in the world and being amazingly sport oriented (well
), consistently and frequently finishing in the top 3 of the Olympics, why do the USA fall short in arguably the world sport, football. (just to clarify again, not American football)
For example, here is the USA world cup history
other than in 1930 where they finished in 3rd, or 2002 when they reached the quarter finals, the USA have never gotten past the previous stages to reach the quarter finals or further, and for decades did not qualify.
So what is it exactly about the USA that they lack when it comes to football when compared to other huge nations
