The imagery reminds some people of Hottentot Venus (http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hottentot_Venus), whose fetishized and exploited look is largely responsible for the stereotyped image of black female bodies. I suggest some of you read her story and maybe you'll get it, if you give it a try.

Now I highly doubt this was Katy's intention, but it was a gross overlook by her team. Some are saying the look is about plastic surgery, but I find that hard to believe with the inclusion of the gold earrings and fake nails, a more current stereotype about black women. It was a big mistake all around and it's getting hard to defend as "a mistake" when this is the third time in less than a year that she has caused outrage because of her perceived racist imagery.

Edit: the downplaying and downright disregard for the arguments being made can be perceived as racist in and of itself. This all started when black women began talking about it on twitter. I don't think a bunch of primarily white Katy fans get to tell black women that they aren't allowed to be upset by what they feel is someone mocking their bodies.

It pretty much supports the idea of appropriating culture to serve her purpose and fool her fans into thinking ET and Dark Horse are her playing with 'urban' music.
