A mess of a person because he was heavily addicted to painkillers, plastic surgeries that left him unrecognizable and had the ODDEST fixation with inviting kids to sleep in his bed.
If you're an MJ fan, you know damn well he was an erratic, uncooperative and heavily unreliable artist and person.

Decades at a time? Michael's albums sold huge amounts for more than a single year, he didn't need to throw out a record every 18 months. His longest gap between studio album releases was after Invincible, though he still delivered:
Number Ones (12-14 million copies sold) [DVD of Number Ones is 13x plat in US alone]
The Essential Michael Jackson (9 million copies/18 million units sold)
Thriller 25 (a re-release with literally no promotion that sold 3 million copies in a year)
Sony tried to bankrupt him and sabotage Invincible, why would he go rushing to record a new studio record for that label? He proved in court they were playing him, exited his contract while retaining ownership of half of Sony. Strange savviness for someone who's such a "heavily unreliable" "MESS."
And LOL at the idea the few shows he cancelled on the record breaking tours he did failed to meet Sony's requirements. Two concert series with over 4.4M ticket sales, on what planet is that a failure of obligations/a mess?!
Considering Michael Jackson's life from childhood to his death, I wouldn't rush to say he was a mess as a person. He had problems, some of which he overcame and others he didn't. The idea he should be a perfectly well adjusted person having spent his entire life under nonstop media surveillance and genuine slander is a MESS of an expectation. It was a MESS with what he had to deal with.
