The longest run of No. 1s by solo females in the history of the Adult Contemporary chart is over. After a 36-week reign by Colbie Caillat's "Bubbly" (19 weeks), Sara Bareilles' "Love Song" (15 weeks) and Leona Lewis' "Bleeding Love" (two weeks), David Cook's "The Time of My Life" (19/RCA) is the new AC champ, the first No. 1 by a male artist since Josh Groban's "I'll Be Home for Christmas" ruled for three weeks in December 2007 to January 2008.
There is another run that Cook's song does not interrupt: "Time" is the fourth consecutive No. 1 by an artist's first entry on the AC tally. Caillat, Bareilles and Lewis all scored No. 1 hits with their debut singles.
Cook is the second "American Idol" winner to top the AC survey following Kelly Clarkson, and the fourth "Idol" finalist, after Clarkson, Kimberley Locke and Chris Daughtry of the group Daughtry. "Time" is the eighth song by an "Idol" competitor to reach the AC summit; Clarkson and Locke have both had three No. 1s and Daughtry had one.
"Time" is the 193rd "Idol" No. 1, counting all national and domestic charts compiled by Billboard. Those 193 chart-toppers are by 23 different "Idol" contestants, and -- with the advance of "Time" to first place on the AC list -- Cook joins the top 10 of those 23.
Here is a breakdown of how many No. 1s each of those 23 "Idol" singers has collected to date:
