Because they provide the food that harms the people.
But I don't think the blame should be placed on the restaurants tbh. People need to STOP eating fast food if they want to lead a healthy lifestyle. It's your choice to eat fast food and if you do you have to deal with the consequences, especially when nutritional info is provided.
There are two ways of looking at this. The first is that customers are the ones who make the decision to eat fast food. They know full well what fast food can make them and nobody forces them to eat it, so they can't blame anyone but themselves.
On the other hand, it is true that the fast food companies offer up extremely cheap and efficiently produced food that induces people to eat a lot. They are a business and that's their way to make money. I don't see anything intrinsically wrong with that so you can't 'blame' them for the obesity. But in an objective sense they do have a hand in making it happen. I guess you can say they are catalystic, but not responsible.
Well the food they produce is sodium and sugar heaven and that makes it addictive. They shouldn't be blamed, but it's not surprising that people can get fat eating it. It's almost like a drug for some people. Throw in the fact that it's cheap, and you have a recipe for disaster.
Customers make the decision to eat there. Plus they offer (relatively) healthy alternatives for people. McDonald's etc can't be blamed for the obesity problem, it's the general publics greed.

Extremely well said. MTE though I could not have worded it as good as you did..
Fast Food companies cut out the healthy aspects of food for a cheaper price, it's a lot cheaper to buy a frozen Pizza or order from Pizza Hut than it is to make one from scratch.
When you see a food commercial on TV, you get hungry. It works like that for every human. So with all the McDonalds and Burger King commercials, people get fatter.
