I never experienced it as a child. I guess I was "protected" by multiple-cultural environment.
But, at age fourteen, I had the veil lifted and had an ugly experience while studying at a friend's house (her name is Monica). Our study group included 3 white kids, a black girl, and myself (Afro-Latina). One of my white friends made an inappropriate/vulgar joke that the adults in that house were able to hear. Somehow they pinned it on me and my black girl friend. Monica's mom was livid and said that she wanted those "two n.... out of her house and to never come back". She then referred to me as a "half-breed". Needless to say, we left and never went back to that den of racism. My friend Monica was mortified and apologized for it profusely.
Other instances had to do with a couple of rude customers at a previous job telling me to "go back to Mexico or Puerto Rico", even though that's not even my heritage, all because of my Spanish last name
Last, and the worst in my opinion, happened on a Friday night in Prague while on Summer vacation with some friends. We were harassed by some drunken Neo-nazis who called us all sorts of names in Czech and English. One of them even spat at us and then threw a glass bottle against the floor. So damn rude and scary, tbh.
It's just part of life, I guess.
Dang, this was a tl;dr sort of essay. My apologies.
