What is with the ban gun comments? If you want freedom then yes there will be shootings on occasion, this country has 300 million people, some of them will go bananas and murder folks. What do you expect?

Why wouldn't they be able to? Is there supposed to be an invisible barrier or something? Guard towers and barbed wire? I'm confused.

Ok, I'm going to respond with an opinion that many will call extreme, but here goes.

First of all, I would like to call to your intention the case of the 4 year old in New Jersey who shot a 6 year old a few months ago. And the case of the woman who opened fire on a station wagon full of a family of 7+ people because it used her driveway to back up in to turn around. And the case of a pregnant woman shot to death because she heard people outside arguing loudly, went onto her porch to investigate, and was hit in the crossfire when one of the arguers pulled a gun.

There is SO MUCH CONSTANT unnecessary death due to the fact that random people are just ALLOWED to have guns "because they need them for defense" and then they ABUSE the fact that they have been allowed to have a gun.

So here comes the controversial part - I don't give a **** about your ability to defend yourself from a random home intruder.

WHY? Because the bottom line is - deaths due to an instance in which there is a premeditated criminal intent, i.e., a robbery, WILL ALWAYS HAPPEN. They are a constant. They are the independent variable.

But those deaths due to people's stupidity/irresponsibility? Those are fixable. Those are changeable. Those don;t need to happen.

If a robber breaks into my house with a gun and I have no gun to defend myself with, so I die, but I know that all those other ****ing retards out there don't have guns, so the deaths described in the 2nd paragraph of this post are no longer happening? SO BE IT. LET ME DIE FOR THAT. And LET YOU DIE FOR IT. The removal of people's "ability to defend themselves" is an acceptable one to pay to make sure that everybody is safe from stupidity.

I want this thread to be about the incident and the news involving it, not personal opinions and argument.

Everyone in this thread needs to stop. Right now. No matter where your opinion falls on the "guns should be completely banned" Vs "guns should be completely allowed" spectrum.

Of course. Yes, that was indeed the intent of the founders.

In a time when the extent of arms technology was muskets. Which was all that the government had, too. Which lead to an environment in which the populace could arm themselves effectively against government oppression.

Technology has changed. It would therefore be erroneous for us not to adapt our enforcement/interpretations of centuries old laws along with that change.

I've been to Reynolds High School so many times, it's scary to me to think it happened so close. So sad what happened, RIP to the boy who died.

Knowing what's out there in private industry, and the fact that most of the military technology is developed by private industry, I can't support the argument that government has access to better technology that would render us defenseless against them in a police state. In my opinion, the government having the upper hand is all the more cause to support the right to bear arms for the reasoning set by our forefathers.

Anyway, I think we should consider the argument of modern production capabilities compared to the 17th century. We are producing almost 10 million guns a year for CIVILIANS (and that doesn't include rifles). This has more than doubled since 2001. This is due to streamlined mechanical manufacturing processes among other factors. We produce guns too easily, and too fast.

If the production was better regulated, I think over time we can slow the growth of civilian gun possession and related crimes exponentially.

Sorry babe but if you have to die for something I'd rather you die for the right to bear arms.
