Nicki Minaj’s “Pills N Potions” Video Is a Work of Art
The Harajuku Barbie’s visuals for “Pills N Potions” look so decadent that she could hang it up in a museum—flatscreen.
Martel, who is the mastermind behind Minaj's "Right Thru Me" video as well, uses some stunning yet simple visuals, with a handful of visual effects thanks to Lillemon. Meanwhile, Game plays Nicki's love interest—which is great, because last month he was spitting a diss track over her heavy "Chi-Raq" instrumentals.
Either way, Martel's vision isn't over the top, which fits right in with Nicki's raw emotions all over the track, and her natural look. Plus, we can't help but note the Alice in Wonderland themes throughout the video, too. It's the most honest and emotional we've heard her on a song in quite some time, and if anything, gets us even more excited for the stories on The Pink Print.
In the video directed by Diane Martel, Nicki is in full-on seductive mode as she shows off her cleavage and looks intensely at the camera. Game, who makes a cameo as her silent love interest, adds to the entire theme. There are drugs, metal dripping from her eyes and bunnies throughout too. It’s definitely one of her more creative videos yet.
Gone are the wacky wigs and personas of Nicki’s past, in their place a cigarette-smoking Minaj in simple makeup against muted backgrounds singing the majestic song while crying silver tears, shining a grill, wearing Playboy bunny ears and chilling with a shirtless, bearded Game.
In what looks like a set for a high fashion shoot, Nicki emotes through the tune’s yearning lyrics under CGI pink clouds alongside fluffy bunnies smoking E-cigs and melting powder blue mansions in the hills.
Compared to Minaj’s typically over-the-top music videos for hits like “Starships,” “Super Bass,” and “Beez In The Trap,” “Pills N Potions” is the rapper’s most down-to-earth, simple video to date.
Minaj still wears her signature pasties in several shots, but the noticeably un-raunchy video focuses on the Grammy nominee’s natural beauty as she wears significantly less makeup and dons plain T-shirts and tank tops in most scenes.
