Variety has alerted us to PricewaterhouseCoopers's new study that shows box office and digital revenue is projected to rise steadily over the course of the next five years, while the sales of DVDs--as well as other disc formats--are predicted to fall drastically. This study posits that the sale of streaming video titles will exceed the sale of physical DVDs as soon as 2016. Which means, DVD's days are numbered.

DVD sales saw a 28% drop last year, making $12.2 billion. This total is expected to only reach $8.7 billion by 2018, a time at which electronic home video (streaming titles or digital downloads) are anticipated to be the highest-earning element of filmmaking. Within five years, digital video profits are expected to leap from 2014's projected $8.5 total to $17 billion. Basically, PwC projects that by 2018, digital video will be earning distributors more profits than movies' theatrical box office will.

Regarding 3D, Hollywood's obstacle is essentially that audience enthusiasm for it is dwindling. So, studios are now responding by offering 20% less 3D titles than they did in 2011.

I hate just using digital downloads for movies tbh
that's why I usually buy the combo packs for movies so that I have the movie on 3 platforms
as far as music, I don't buy it digitally unless it's a single that I REALLY like or an EP that isn't out physically
other than that, I always buy CD or vinyl copies
I don't know what I'd do without physical copies

Streaming in general is better. More free space, less damage to the environment, encouraging ISP to improve internet speed.

I only buy the BluRays. Occasionally use Netflix when I'm feeling lazy, though.

That HD audio and video is miles better because it's not compressed in the slightest, compared to what streaming costs.

Plus what about the people with internet caps, and ****.

Granted I don't have a cap, and I have fast internet, but there are people with only one option in their area.

I want CDs to stay, but I'm perfectly happy with DVDs dying out. I'm tired of their ugly ass cases, Blu-Ray or Digital for me

Video & Audio streams on a BR are actually compressed but in a high definition standard, unlike so called "HD Online Streams" which actually will vary according to the connection that you have and it's very noticeable in some cases.

Damn, I remember the VHS to DVD transition like it was yesterday

I mostly use Netflix tbh. Technology moves so fast. DVDs didn't even last for twenty years
