Blu-Ray might have beaten down HD-DVD and helped Sony sell more PS3s, but the company’s plans for a 10 year PS3 life cycle have been dashed by Samsung, which claims Blu-Ray only “has five years left”.

Sony has been pinning its hopes on the format to make the PS3 future-proof, but speaking to Pocket-Lint, Andy Griffiths, director of consumer electronics at Samsung UK said: “I think it [Blu-ray] has 5 years left, I certainly wouldn’t give it 10.”

He went on to admit that 2008 is Blu-Ray’s year, however.

“It’s going to be huge”, he told Pocket-lint. “We are heavily back-ordered at the moment.”

It’s hard to see another format taking over as soon as 2013 though, even if Sony itself admits the format has reached its technical limit, and can’t be improved.

And with the PS3 having a good year in sales it means more people are getting on the Blu-Ray ladder and building up disc collections.

Only 5 years left? Hmm, I'm not so sure about that. I do think that we will all be doing digital downloading in the future, but I would like for Blu-Ray to last longer.

There will always be a need for a physical medium since not everyone has broadband, and I doubt that will change much 5 years from now. Blu-Ray might last 10 years but it won't be on top for all of them. Most likely it will spend about 4-5 of those years dying out to another medium like the VHS did.

The sales and exclusives don't show that. You must be talking about in Japan, it's more potent.

Oddly enough, Xbox sales recently topped PS3 sales in Japan.

Surely. Which in turn, is going to hurt Sony's profits. The majority of people in the world aren't gonna buy a system with terrible exclusives/online and a blu-ray when they can by a 360 much cheaper with better games and online service.

Even though I have an XBOX, I'm going to wait until the price goes down more on PS3, because I have a ton of PS1/PS2 games and I am really really going to want Gran Turismo 5

Well, your out of luck if you were planning on playing ur Ps2 games on the Ps3. they took that feature away. ugh
