It was originally done as an April Fool's joke in like 2007 and I believe at the time Alanis said it was to showcase just how ridiculous and empty songwriting had become in exchange for a quick hit. I think she also ended up getting a butt cake from the BEPs to show there was no hard feelings.
It's iconic.
