Call it what you want, but having yearly updates that are less major is the better way to go. It allows the ecosystem to remain more consistent and keeps users from falling into gaps since there's more hardware support. Most systems couldn't handle the transition from XP to Vista because Aero was such a resource hog. If Microsoft picked one design and stuck to it (Windows 7) and just built upon it each year, Windows would be in a much better place.

See— those "yearly minor updates" that Apple markets as new Operating Systems (and previously made you pay for them) are what Microsoft calls "Service Packs".
And even if they weren't, Microsoft could never completely rehaul it's Operating Systems on a yearly basis. Corporations depend on the stability of Windows releases and yearly OS upgrades would wreak havoc on their networks. Deploying an OS across a network in enterprise is a big deal, it takes months. Let's not even get into end-user learning curves.
Anyway, no matter how jaded the consumer is by Apple's success at convincing them that their Operating System is better, when it really isn't, Windows will continue to make the world go 'round.
It will remain the most popular and useful operating system for both businesses and consumers and as a consequence of that, it will remain the most targeted OS in information security.
If the situation was reversed, this would be the case for Mac as well. Too bad it will never be.
