I love both women. But Madonna has clearly had more impact on the industry overall!
The way that some people in this thread are trying to play down her achievements and influence shows that they most likely think so themselves!

Madonna had way more impact. Janet could wish she ever had the impact, the sales, the trendsetting, the longelivity etc that Madonna had.
Also Madonna has way better songs than Janet has, All For You is the only good Janet song.

Madonna has more impact. But don't discredit Janet because of that. Both women have made incredible contributions to music and entertainment.

Madonna by far. There are tones of "local Madonna's" outside of USA like "Spanish Madonna","Russian Madonna","African Madonna",etc.
Janet is really overrated here.I'm always reading about how great of a dance Janet is.while she is nothing special and her dance is pretty much soulless. She was a basic rnb-chick like Monica and Brandy, singing generic rnb songs. Her impact is not visible, because there were tons of girls like her, while Madonna was special.

Madonna, but Janet also had a huge impact on today's performers.

That's completely subjective and irrelevant to the topic.

You sound so ignorant. What female artist black or female was dancing like Janet? NO one. So you can quit it with tons of girls were like her mess. And Janet's music was generic? Please. Her vocabulary is one of the widest in pop music. The subject matter in her music include: racism, illiteracy, children, homophobia, aids, domestic violence, sex, abstinence, independence, feminism, self-identity, homelessness, hunger, teen pregnancy and even more. And that's arguably more topics than Madonna has covered. She has covered pop, rap, r&b, rock, dance, brazilian jazz, opera, jazz, african and indian inspired music. And the audicity of you to compare her to Brandy and Monica when they have little to no musical range. You clearly are ignorant to her music and legacy. Janet will never be overrated as a dancer. You call her dancing soulless, yet you stan for Madonna. Madonna has shown little to no variety in her dancing and she'll never be as acclaimed as Janet is when it comes to dancing. The kii is Madonna is actually trained and Janet has no training, yet Janet is heraded as one of the greatest dancers and Madonna isn't reguarded anywhere in that respect. That says alot.

Longelivity in talking about having the most success and impact the longest. When talking about longelivity nobody is asking who has been in the industry for the longest, but who has survived and has been successful in the industry the longest.
Janet first hit album was her third album that was released in 1986. She started flopping after 2001, her last hit was in 2001.
Madonna debuted with success in 1983 and didnt start flopping properly until MDNA in 2012. Hard Candy sold ok, 3-4m copies WW, a WW smash hit 4 Minutes, that also hit #3 in the US. And even MDNA outsold Janet last two albums. Madonnas last top 10 song in the US was in 2012, which also was her latest lead single, even if it fell of the charts fast, a top 10 song is a top 10 song. Janet could ever wish for that. Hell even 4 Minutes had bigger impact that any Janet single since the mid 90s. Not too mention Madonnas latest tour is one of the most successful tours ever.
Madonnas seventh album sold as much as Janets fifth album, and that fifth album is Janet best selling album. For Madonnas its her third 20m selling album.
Of course both had impact, but its pretty obvious Madonna had way more impact and she is way more remembered to this day than Janet. And even if Madonnas has more albums, Madonna still outsold Janet if we only include her 10 albums compared Janets 10 albums.
Janets tenth album sold 449,000 copies in the US, Madonnas tenth album sold 1,703,000 in the US, and 12m copies WW. The facts speak for themselves.

What's AOTY?
both women have impact. not everything is a ****ing competition. but you can't deny that madonna is bigger on a worldwide scale.
the other thread is also ridiculous. M showed her boob during the MDNA tour and it was worldwide news everywhere. it had huge impact. I feel the janet nipplegate would've been big no matter which female did it anyway. since it was done on the most watched show on the damn planet..
however I also think britney is more like a younger Janet than a younger madonna, whereas gaga or even P!nk seem more inspired by madonna's theatrics.

Obviously Madonna but I am not here for folks trying to diminish Janet's importance on the pop industry, especially when one of the biggest pop icons used her blueprint.
Thread was unnecessary when the fact of Madge having bigger sales and bigger career has been made known time and time again. Why can't they both be great and recognized for their achievements and respective influence without a tired comparison?
