Attack on Titan is an amazing Manga/Anime based on the even greater (but lessor known) Muv Luv visual novels.
The series follows Eren, Mikasa, and Armin who live in a world where Humanity has almost gone extinct. They live behind three walls containing the final known humans on the planet. Everything is upset when the outermost wall, Wall Maria, is attacked by Titans for the first time in over a hundred years.

A friend recommended it to me but I couldn't get past the first ep.
Is it worth it?
Muv Luv, the series it's based on, is Sci-Fi and the highest-rated visual novel of all time. Here's the first two parts, and here's the third (the one that AOT is based on) but you won't understand the third part without the first two.
As for if AoT is worth it, I LOVE it so much and would highly recommend it.

AoT's manga is very good. It's directly adapted to the anime, though. Very little difference, so I'd recommend the anime above the manga until you've gotten as far as the anime has been adapted. Then switch over to the manga.
The novels which it's based on are the highest-rated ones ever written.
Best anime i've watched. I can't stand the English Dub, but the Japanese one weeeeew
The epic line
"On that day, humanity received a grim reminder. We lived in the fear of the Titans, and were disgraced to live in these cages we called walls"
The English version though
"And just like that, everything changed. At that terrible moment, in our hearts, we knew... "home" was a pen... and humanity, cattle."
so is the one on Netflix (the Japanese one with English subtitles) having tons of bad lines like that? I'll have to rewatch the entire thing with proper subtitles
YES. This rekindled my interest in anime. It's so damn beautiful.

Oh definitely. I was a bit skeptical after the first episode, but after that it gets pretty damn ingenious and ballsy. I'd definitely watch the first 10 episodes, at least. If you're not on board by then, it's just not for you.
and would highly recommend it.
I know the story progresses in the manga, but I would prefer to see the action visually
