It used to be that pop artists got 4 singles from their album pretty much no matter what. Yet lately, many artists are struggling to get past 2 or 3 singles.

Kesha only got 2 single with Warrior, Britney only got 2 singles with Britney Jean, even Miley only got 3 singles with Bangerz and that was with the first two being major hits.

Have labels become less willing to give artists more singles after one underperforms? Discuss.

In Britney's case it was the smartest thing to do, the album flopped VERY VERY VERY HARD, radio wasn't by her side, Work Bitch was a moderate hit and Perfume flopped, so no reason on spending coins on what's already super dead...

But considering Miley, I believe the Bangerz era hasn't been killed yet, they will probably give it another single I think... She had two major hits and one underperformance, they could definitely give the album a try at another single.

It seems Gaga has the same fate with Artpop too, Applause, DWUW and G.U.Y., the first one was a hit, not massive, but a hit, the second one was a fade and the third one did nothing... It seems unwise to try another release...

I mean, albums just don't capture attention for as long as they used to either.

Katy is going onto her 5th soon so...

Why would anyone buy a single after the album has been released and purchased? The quality of the music the past 3 years has declined. Music public are npt going to spend money on bad music.

But even with Katy the PRISM singles either smash way beyond what Teenage Dream could have dreamed of or become some of her biggest under performances. Singles are different now

I think it's become more unnecessary to have 4 singles. Especially singles that are over half-a-year after the album was released…

Yeah, it's becoming harder to keep one album going for anything more than a year.

The best recent example of a really long era is Night Visions, but it couldn't get anything beyond two Top 10 singles and OTOTW flopped hard.

It really hasn't changed that much. There were plenty of 1/2 single eras in past decades.

No. Rihanna and Katy usually release 5 or more, and so the other big name artists.

Well it all depends. For example Katys eras go on for a while with a lot of singles but that doesnt necessarily mean the album will sell more than an album that has 1 or 2 singles. For example Celine Dions Greatest Hits had NO PROMO and one single, but it sold 15 million copies. Like how?

It has to do with declining digital sales and increasing streaming. By the time it's released people hear it a lot, and don't bother buying the singles since they bought the album or streamed the future singles to death. Besides getting a hit 4th single or beyond is a feat all by itself.

There's no point to release when the outcome is not good and not helping album sales.

But yeah, its different now, idk why or when it happened.
